Satellite Wishes

“Starlight star bright
First star I see tonight
I wish I may
I wish I might
Have the wish I wish tonight.”

Prisoner perimeter security lights
are so numerous and so glaring
that I can never see stars—only satellites.

But I shut my eyes
and my kids and I noisily jockey for position
on the huge trampoline in our dark front yard.

As we take in the crystals
scattered over velvet black above us,
our chatter subsides and
even the cicadas and crickets hush.

Gravity releases his Earthly grip
And Heaven lures us.

In the country quiet of a mid-summer’s night,
Joy and Love envelop
Our free-floating yet connected souls
and swell our awed hearts.

When I open my eyes in this place,
I wish on my favorite shiny satellite
even though satellite wishes
don’t come true.
